BBA Networking Happy Hour— Thank You to All Who Came!

The happiest hours are the ones we spend with our friends! Our first Networking Happy Hour of the year, hosted by the one and only El Quetzal on Tues., March 19, was a huge success! Thank you to all who came out.

We met representatives from Yoga on Beacon, Counterpoint Massage, Rainier Valley Development Fund, Shark Bite Ceviches, and others—plus community members, and our two newest board members, Suzy Lee and Michael Charles, were able to make it out. Great food, amazing horchata, good times!

All are invited to our quarterly networking happy hours. Mark your calendars now for the next one! Our networking happy hours in 2019 will continue to take place on Tuesdays in the third week of third month of the quarter. Next up: Tuesday, June 18, 4:30 – 6 PM (location TBD). Anyone is welcome to show up, say hi, ask questions, and get to know the organization in this fun and casual setting. We’ll provide tasty finger food and talk about 2019 happenings so far, what’s coming up, and invite your questions. We look forward to seeing you at the next one! Featured Image by Warren C. on Yelp

Plate of Nations Started Friday 3/22!

This will be Beacon Hill’s second year participating, with El Quetzal and Tacos Chukis ready to serve you! You’ll find more participating restaurants just a short train ride down the hill to Mt. Baker Station, like these Mt. Baker Hub-sponsored spots: Little Chengdu(Sichuan), Cafe Ibex (Ethiopian), The Original Philly’s (American), Buddha Bruddah (Asian mixed plates), and Willie’s Taste of Soul (BBQ, Soul Food). Check out the PON website for a full list of restaurants and to learn more about the event.

A Warm Welcome to Our Newest Board Members: Michael Charles & Suzy Lee

Suzy Lee Suzy Lee has longtime family connections on Beacon Hill and works on the hill as a Development Associate with El Centro de la Raza. Suzy also serves on the Arnold Guild with the Fred Hutchison Cancer & Research Center. She has a degree in Geospatial Informatics from the University of Washington.

Michael Charles Michael is an owner of a political consulting firm named CD Strategic, Inc. He lives in Beacon Hill with his wife Toshiko, dog Apollo and cat Kaji. His wife Toshiko is a fourth generation Beacon Hill resident! He’s interested in building political power for BBA and strategies to protect businesses, especially those owned by people of color, facing displacement from the swift changes (good and bad) happening to the neighborhood.

Musang Seattle Wants a Home on Beacon!

Chef Melissa Miranda and her Filipinx restaurant project, Musang, finished up a Kickstarter campaign last week to launch Musang into a full-blown brick and mortar restaurant. The project raised $91,626 (exceeding a $75K goal). You may have heard the name Musang from the weekend brunch pop-ups chef Melissa Miranda has been hosting at Bar del Corso for some time now, or maybe you even attended one of the events. Beacon Hill has lost two beloved Filipino restaurants in recent time. How cool would it be for the community for this dream to be realized?! From chef Melissa Miranda of Musang: “Musang Seattle is incredibly excited for the opportunity to take our pop-up brand to the next level by opening our own brick-and-mortar establishment. I’d love to share with you more about the mission at the heart of our brand, and ultimately our food. “As a child, the kitchen was the heart of my family’s home. My earliest memories were made in the kitchen. I would always end up there, asking my parents if I could help cook as they fed me bits of what they were cooking, or hiding under the table and eavesdropping on conversations between my elders. “The very first time I asked my dad what I could do, he put me to work — cleaning squid he had just caught. I must have been only five years old…” Read more on the Kickstarter page and follow Musang Seattle on Facebook to stay in the know. We hope to see Musang in a permanent Beacon Hill location very soon!

Update on Efforts to Preserve the Garden House

Seattle Beacon Hill Historic Preservation Coalition, on 2/21/19, successfully made the case to Seattle’s Landmark Preservation Board—who voted unanimously to officially nominate the Garden House. What’s next? The Garden House, or Turner-Koepf house, and its future have been the subject of heated debate, and its recent sale (and threats of parts of the grounds being paved over to make way for townhouses) have sparked a series of community actions to organize to protect the property including the formation of Seattle Beacon Hill Historic Preservation Coalition, who recently filed to nominate Garden House as a historic landmark. They made great strides at the city level when on Feb. 21 the house and grounds were nominated by the Seattle Landmark Preservation Board, who voted unanimously, for historic landmark status. But the fate of the property is not yet sealed. Now that Garden House has been officially nominated as a historic landmark, the next step is the designation hearing, where the Landmark Preservation Board will approve or reject the designation. If approved, the board will determine what aspects of the house and grounds are protected and what approvals must be applied for by property owners in order to make changes to the property going forward. The designation hearing is on April 3 at 3:30 PM at City Hall and is open to the public. Get more details and follow along with the process at SaveGardenHouse.org.
